Christo – a visionary that will live on

We are deeply saddened by the passing of one of the greatest artists of contemporary landscape and environmental art – Christo Vladimirov Javacheff – Christo.

Christo was not only a brilliant, fearless and uncompromising artistic visionary, but someone who’s passion, conviction, devotion and love to the craft, has touched us on a personal level too. We, at Deep Dive Systems and BulDock, are eternally honored to have worked with Christo on two of his most emblematic installations – “The Floating Piers” at Lake Iseo in 2016 and “The London Mastaba” at Lake Serpentine in 2018. We would never forget a surreal moment that happened the night before the official opening of “The Floating Piers”. Just after putting the final piece of fabric on top of the floating pontoons, around midnight, a big storm came out of nowhere. Christo assembled the entire team together and said in Bulgarian “Благодаря ви за куража.” (trans. “Thank you for your courage”). He had once previously said “I think it takes much greater courage to create things to be gone than to create things that will remain.”

Christo showed us that the entire world can be an art gallery. His works were not intended to stay between the walls of modern museum, where he thought objects exist apart from everyday life. Christo’s aim was to turn everyday life into art, to provoke people to look at their surroundings in a different way and reimagine them. His ever-changing shapes of art created not only physical experiences, but emotional and mental reactions too. Christo taught us how to make the impossible possible and he left us the legacy of the hope of imagination. We are forever indebted for his artistry, creativity, leadership and freedom of spirit.
